Slip-on flanges are one of the simplest flanges used in the entire industry. They are designed with a low-profile head, which can be easily slid on the surface of the pipe and fitted with a fillet weld. They look similar to a raised face component and can be utilized without a hub if the space is less. Their lower costs along with, easy installation procedures, make them one of the preferred choices by a lot of people. These components are very common in lower-pressure systems where the stress is lower. This is due to the fact these components don’t accept items without a fillet weld connection.

What is the purpose of slip-on flange?

They are widely seen in low-pressure applications used for transporting gases and fluids. These low-costs items are an excellent alternative to higher-priced items. These components are slid on the surface of the pipe and welded using one or two fillet welds. This prevents any risks of leakage or failures. Furthermore, their easy assembly and availability in a wide range of diameters further see its utilization in several structures.

What is SORF?

These components are divided into raised face or ring-type joint flange depending on the face of the components. An RF flange shows a small position extrusion from the bottom face of the flange. This area allows a gasket to be placed near the seal. The gasket allows for a stronger and better sealing performance within the item. As there is a gradual increase in the pressure rating, the height of this face will slowly get bigger.

How much gap do you need for a slip-on flange?

These items can be fitted in areas, which are remote and have little space. They don’t require extra longitudinal space and can be mounted with ease. Apart from this, they don’t require an exact cut in the pipe and can be aligned very easily.

Are slip-on flanges welded?

Yes, they can be easily welded utilizing a weld. They may require more than one weld to ensure that it remains strong in different environments.

Welding

A fillet weld is performed to join the components together. The durable low-cost material used in producing them makes them an ideal fit for a variety of applications. In certain applications, two or more welds may be needed to bind them, together which may increase their overall costs. When these components are welded there, are no restrictions imposed. This allows different types of items such as tees, elbows, joints to be welded on them.

Where do you use a slip-on flange?

These components are inserted in pipes or fitting in a manner that distributes the pipe equally and enables it to have equal wall thickness. They are utilized in several low-pressure applications where the risk of leakage is low. It is common in cooling water lines, low-pressure compressed lines, and firefighting systems. The items are also seen in process lines for different substances such as steam oil, gas, condenser, and so on.

ASME B16.5 vs B16.47 slip on flange?

Both these specifications of flanges belong to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This standard covers flanges in different dimensions and sizes. Both of these components can be distinguished by some basic traits.

  • ASME B16.5 covers flanged fittings and steel pipe flanges between NPS ½ to NPS 24 inches. For a higher dimensional range, the ASME B16.47 is used.
  • The B16.47 range can be used in systems having higher pressures, temperatures, and ratings, while the other can be used in lower pressure classes.
  • The B16.5 range is cheaper in comparison to the other range.
